Renowned for its work gear, Carhartt items are sturdy and reliable and evolved into fashion statements in the 1990s, encouraged by the hip-hop aesthetic. A bit of history… Founded by Hamilton Carhartt in Michigan in 1889, Carhartt began as a clothing line for manual laborers with only two sewing machines and a team of five. Promoting itself as a brand that focuses on the durability and dependability of clothing, Carhartt continues to be found on construction sites, farms and other labour-intensive job locations. However, Carhartt’s oversized cuts and hard-wearing fabrics were championed by the 90s hip-hop artists and became a commonly worn, fashionable brand, pioneered by famous figures. Throughout the 90s, the golden ‘C’ was regularly sported, notably by celebrities such as Johnny Depp and Tupac. Today the brand is still hugely popular and now is worn by public figures from all industries, not just those from Compton with their hard aesthetic.

 

Memorably, Carhartt was worn by the cast of Interstellar, with Matthew McConaughey in the Duck Detriot Jacket. Similarly, the brand has featured on stars in films such as Before and After, The Twilight Saga and Fast and Furious in multiple contexts.
