Second-Hand September: The Ultimate Guide to Shopping Vintage & Pre-loved This Autumn
Posted by jonathan kemp on
September is here, which means cooler mornings, layering season and the countdown to autumn. It also marks Second-Hand September, the perfect excuse to rethink how we shop and refresh our wardrobes without starting from scratch.
Launched by Oxfam in 2019, Second-Hand September encourages people to choose pre-loved clothing throughout the month instead of automatically buying new. What started as a 30-day challenge has grown into a wider movement around making more considered choices and keeping clothes in circulation for longer.
At Thrifted, we think it's also an opportunity to have more fun with fashion.
What is Second-Hand September?
The idea is simple: before reaching for something brand new, look at what already exists.
That could mean shopping vintage, buying pre-loved, visiting charity shops, selling pieces you no longer wear or finding new ways to style the clothes already in your wardrobe.
It's a small shift in mindset, but one that can make getting dressed much more interesting. You never quite know what you'll find when you shop second-hand. And with autumn approaching, September is one of the best times to start.
Why Shop Second-Hand?
For us, one of the biggest appeals of vintage is individuality.
Instead of following the latest collection, you're able to explore clothing from different eras, brands and styles. Think faded graphic tees, vintage sportswear, oversized sweatshirts, classic denim, leather jackets and old-school designer pieces. These are the clothes that can give an outfit personality.
There's also something special about finding a piece with a history. Natural fading, worn-in fabrics and details from another era can create a character that's difficult to replicate in a brand-new garment.
Second-hand shopping also gives us a chance to think about how much we actually consume. Oxfam's latest Second-Hand September campaign highlights that 4 in 10 Brits have worn an item of clothing just once, while 32% of British wardrobes went unworn last year.
Buying less and making more use of the clothes already out there can help keep garments in use for longer.
Start With Your Own Wardrobe
Before searching for your next vintage find, take another look at what you already own.
September is the perfect time to bring out your jackets, knitwear, sweatshirts and heavier denim. Try combinations you wouldn't normally wear layer an oversized shirt under a jacket, pair relaxed jeans with a fitted top or bring an old graphic tee back into rotation.
You might discover that your wardrobe already has more possibilities than you thought.
If something genuinely isn't getting worn, consider selling or donating it rather than leaving it forgotten at the back of the wardrobe. Giving clothes another life is an important part of a more circular approach to fashion.
Build Your Autumn Wardrobe Second-Hand
The jacket
A great jacket can completely change an outfit. Look for vintage leather jackets, bombers, Harringtons and workwear styles that can work season after season. Don't be afraid of a little wear, it's often what gives vintage outerwear its character.
The denim
Vintage denim is loved for its distinctive washes, fits and natural signs of wear. From relaxed straight-leg styles to classic 501s, second-hand denim offers plenty of options beyond current-season silhouettes.
The graphic tee
Don't pack away your favourite graphic tees just yet. Wear one underneath an open shirt, layer it over a long-sleeve top or add a vintage jacket as temperatures drop. Sports graphics, band tees and retro logos can instantly add personality to a simple outfit.
Vintage sportswear
Track jackets, football shirts and retro sweatshirts remain wardrobe favourites. Mix them with more classic pieces for a look that feels current without being overly trend-led.
How To Shop Second-Hand Better
The best second-hand finds aren't always the pieces you set out to find.
Instead of searching for one specific trend, think about what you actually need. Looking for jeans? Consider the fit, rise, wash and fabric rather than focusing solely on the brand. Searching for a jacket? Explore different styles and see what works with the clothes you already own.
Always check the condition, including seams, zips, buttons and fabric. Minor signs of wear aren't necessarily a negative, with vintage, they can be part of the appeal.
And before buying, ask yourself:
Would I still want this if it wasn't trending?
If the answer is yes, you've probably found something worth keeping.
Make Second-Hand A Habit
Second-Hand September doesn't have to end when September does. The aim isn't perfection or giving up new clothing forever. It's simply about becoming more intentional with what we buy and making the most of what we already have.
Next time you're tempted by something new, pause and ask:
Do I need it?
Could I find it second-hand?
Can I style something I already own?
September is just the beginning. Autumn is the perfect season to experiment with vintage, rediscover forgotten favourites and find those one-off pieces that make your wardrobe feel like your own.
Because great style doesn't have to be brand new.
